Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opposing team’s hoop or basket, which is elevated 10 feet above the ground. The game is played on a rectangular court with a hoop at each end.

Teams score points by making field goals, which are worth two points if taken from inside the three-point line and three points if taken from beyond it. Free throws, awarded after certain fouls, are worth one point each. The objective is to accumulate more points than the opposing team by the end of the game, which is divided into four quarters.

Players can move the ball by dribbling (bouncing it on the floor) or passing it to teammates, and they must aim to outmaneuver their opponents, which requires skill, strategy, and teamwork. Basketball emphasizes physical fitness, agility, and coordination, and is popular at both amateur and professional levels worldwide. The sport has organized leagues and tournaments, including the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the United States, which is one of the most prominent professional leagues globally.
